Whiskey Distillery Trail

By Whiskey Island

Meeting point is James Fox Cigar and Whiskey Store at 1:15pm – a leading merchant of fine Cuban cigars, premium Irish whiskey, smoking pipes and select spirits since 1881. We board our luxury transport and we’re off to the Liberties neighbourhood of Dublin which once housed 32 working distilleries in the 1800s.

Today, you visit 3 distilleries who have brought whiskey-making back to the Liberties. Our first visit is to the Dublin Liberties Distillery – a brand new distillery set in a 300-year-old building. Along with learning how their whiskeys are made and how they differ from other world brands, you’ll be entertained with some wonderful stories on characters who lived over many years in The Liberties.

Just a short walk around the block will see us at Teeling Whiskey Distillery – the first new distillery in Dublin for over 125 years. We give you a quick glance at the distillery floor before arriving in the bar to try their Small Batch Teeling Whiskey and their Single Pot Still – the first Dublin distilled Single Pot Still to come out of the city in nearly 50 years.

Next to Pearse Lyons Distillery, set in St. James’ Church which dates back to the 12th century. The tour includes a saunter around the graveyard on the grounds of the church and the you’ll hear the fascinating stories of those buried there before we glimpse of their distillery set in the restored church. You’ll then try three Pearse Lyons whiskeys and their leading gin.

Our coach takes us back to downtown Dublin and we finish at the Celtic Whiskey Shop for a tasting of two premium Irish whiskeys and an Irish cream with one of the store’s Irish Whiskey ambassadors. Then you have the chance to browse through their vast stocks of whiskey and maybe pick up a bottle of the whiskey you enjoyed most over the afternoon.

John and his Dad share the same name, John Callely. They share the same pride of country and have a particular grá (Gaelic for love) for Irish whiskey tourism, an industry that has been good to them over their combined 40 years’ experience. They’re glad to say their name is synonymous with premium whiskey experiences in Irish tourism circles, so much so that they formed Whiskey Island to share these experiences with Irish whiskey fans visiting Ireland! Look forward to sharing the story with you!

We spend a lot of the tour in the Liberties Neighbourhood of Dublin, once famed for it’s whiskey making. Dublin had 37 working distilleries at the end of the 19 century, and 32 were in the Liberties. Every one of them disappeared in the 20th century but now they are making a comeback! And we visit 3 of them today.
