The Dublin Whiskey Story

By Whiskey Island

Discover the magic of the onetime whiskey making capital of the world with your Guide John.
Meeting point is James Fox Cigar and Whiskey Store at 1:15pm – Ireland’s leading merchant of fine Cuban cigars, premium Irish whiskey, smoking pipes and select spirits since 1881. Just upstairs we have the Irish Whiskey Museum, a very fitting introduction to Irish Whiskey.

You’ll join a scheduled tour here and you will enjoy the captivating anecdotes of talented story tellers as they take you on a journey through the ages revealing the origins of Irish whiskey, its rise to glory, dramatic downfall and current global revival. Tasting of 3 Irish whiskeys follows in the bar at the end of tour.
We board our luxury transport and you can sit back and soak up the magic of Dublin as your guide brings the heritage of whiskey-making in Dublin to life, while recounting some riveting tales! This is a city tour with whiskey in its heart, you’ll see lots of Dublin. We travel along the River Liffey to Smithfield – to the original home of Jameson Irish Whiskey.
John Jameson started distilling his famous whiskey here in 1780 and today, the Jameson visitor centre in the old distillery buildings is one of the most popular attractions in the city. We have a very special tasting lined up for you in Jameson’s maturation warehouse onsite.

Our next stop is a working distillery in the Liberties neighbourhood of Dublin. Here you’ll have the chance to see, smell, hear and experience an actual working distillery. We give you a quick glance at the distillery floor before arriving in the bar to try their finished products. The Liberties was the hub for all distilling in Dublin in the 1800s, and now they are returning after an absence!
Our coach takes us back to downtown Dublin and we finish at the Celtic Whiskey Shop for a tasting of two premium Irish whiskeys with one of the store’s whiskey ambassadors. Then you’re free to browse their stocks and maybe buy the whiskeys you liked on tour!

John and his Dad share the same name, John Callely. They share the same pride of country and have a particular grá (Gaelic for love) for Irish whiskey tourism, an industry that has been good to them over their combined 40 years’ experience. They’re glad to say their name is synonymous with premium whiskey experiences in Irish tourism circles, so much so that they formed Whiskey Island to share these experiences with Irish whiskey fans visiting Ireland! Look forward to sharing the story with you!

Dublin at the end of the 1800s was the undisputed whiskey making capital of the world and was the envy of our whiskey making friends in Scotland and bourbon country. But that all changed in the 1900s and every single distillery disappeared. But now they’re returning thanks to a worldwide Irish whiskey boom! This a story John loves telling over and over .
